MacOS Mail.app not updating server

First, a caveat: this is an older version (v56 running on Ubuntu 18) which I will be updating, but due to a number of circumstances, I simply can’t at the moment.

The Problem: Two of my mail clients (Mail.app on MacOS Ventura and Sonoma) were stuck with a status similar to “Moving messages 1 of 2” for days. I searched Apple forums and other sources and most solutions involved deleting the envelope.index file or deleting the account and let it rebuild. I did both on both Macs and my iPhone as well. As far as I can tell, the iPhone and the Mac running Ventura are OK. I have rebuild mail for the Mac running Sonoma (which is the newer OS) several times with the same result. It connects to the server fine. It sends mail. It receives mail. However, any changes it makes are not reflected in the mail on the server. For example:

  • If I read an email on the Mac, the read status is not updated on the server
  • If I move an email on the Mac, it is not moved on the server
  • If I delete an email on the Mac, it is not move to trash on the server
  • If I send an email on the Mac, it is sent, but does not show up in the sent folder. I can see the connection in the log and it is received by the recipient.
  • I am verifying this by watching the log and through RoundCube and on my phone.

So, to reiterate, I can send and receive mail, but the mail on the server is not being updated. It worked before, now it doesn’t. I’ve dug through Apple support and tried everything I can think of. Does anyone have any ideas what else to try?

Thanks!

Try adding an Exchange account with the Mail.app on top of the existing I suppose IMAP one. See what happens. Or try deleting and readding an IMAP account.

Mail Settings > Accounts. Press the {+} button and choose Microsoft Exchange.

Enter your box.yourserver.com plus smtp settings and password.

Or install https://www.thunderbird.net/
