Hi all, I’ve used mailinabox successfully for about 6 months but in the last week I’ve found DNS stops resolving. I’ve checked my glue records at Hover, all good there. Status checks have only one error, “This box’s reverse DNS is currently [Not Set], but it should be [REDACTED]. Your ISP or cloud provider will have instructions on setting up reverse DNS for this box.” but that seems to be a known bug as far as I know, it tends to flip between set and not set every few days and it’s never affected the DNS before.
I can resolve by IP and I can access my mail and admin pages if I set an entry in my home DNS server but that isn’t going to be a long term solution as I can’t edit the hosts file on my phone. Sending and receiving emails doesn’t seem to be affected either from the testing I’ve done.
I have updated, rebooted, and run setup mailinabox a couple of time now and no change. Please help!
Because I can no longer access my MIAB by the FQDN, dig doesn’t give the right IP and neither dnschecker not mxtoolbox dns lookup can find my server.
Also, it looks like I can’t receive emails after all. I’ve tried a few test emails from a protonmail email to my server and nothing came through. I was thrown off a bit because I had some login verification emails come in a few days ago so I thought it was okay, but I’ve just checked and in the past couple of days 3 for 3 emails did not arrive.
Don’t worry about it, I’m rebuilding the server from scratch. I went all through nds and the firewall and I couldn’t see anything wrong anywhere but it just stopped working. I’ll come back to this thread if I end up with the same issue on the new build.
Well I did the rebuild, had to make a few tweaks to reverse dns on the way so that may have been the original problem.
Now I have a new problem where the backup key, which I confirmed was copied exactly from /home/user-data/backup/secret_key.txt before removing the old server, doesn’t work so now I can’t decrypt my emails going back to September. So, lucky me.
