I recently added a new user to my box and the username had a dash in the local portion (ubuntu-backuppc@boxname). The user creation completed without problem, but this user was unable to login to the box services (imap authentication on the backend failed). Removing the “-” from the local name fixed the login problem. I did not see anything obvious in the MIAB, Postfix, or email RFCs documentation that “-” was disallowed in the username, and I did not perform any further debug. Leaving some breadcrumbs in case someone else stumbles into this problem.
