Are there any plans for Mail-in-a-Box to be updated and distributed with the latest version of SpamAssassin 4.0.1?
Short answer: no
Long answer: Mail-in-a-Box uses the spamassassin package from the Ubuntu version on which it is based. Currently that is 22.04 LTS providing spamassassin version 3.4.6. The (probably) next LTS 24.04 will provide at least Spamassassin 4.0.0.
However, MiaB usually skips an LTS version, meaning that it will probably keep on using Ubuntu 22.04 until 2026 when 26.04 LTS will be released. Thus, for now spamassassin will remain at 3.4.6.
Can you tell me what types of problems I should encounter in Mail-in-a-Box if I manually update to SpamAsassin 4?
For one, if you upgrade mail in a box, the default spamassassin configuration will be installed, probably erasing or being in the way of your manual installation.
