What database does Mail-In-A-Box use as the backbone for OwnCloud?

It uses Sqlite.

What would be the maximum number of users you would recommend for a Box then if all users were actively using OwnCloud and Email?

No idea. We’d have to hear from someone that’s pushed the limits to know. I haven’t. It’ll depend on the server specs too, of course.
