Nameservers cannot have multiple apex domains?

  1. I setup ns1.a.com and ns2.b.com as my nameservers, but when I query 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8 and 9.9.9.9, I either get ns1.a.com and ns2.a.com OR ns1.b.com and ns2.b.com
  2. My registrar Namesilo said I cannot specify a combination of ns1.a.com and ns2.b.com
  3. It has to be ns1.a.com and ns2.a.com, but the article says otherwise

Anyone knows what is going on?

That’s not true. You can have nameservers under different domains. Maybe namesilo doss not allow it, but I doubt it. That means there is some confusion about concepts or definitions somewhere.

I think more details are needed. Which exact steps do you take within the namesilo management site? What is the exact wording of the options you choose? You are not trying to add glue records for other nameservers than your own?

  1. Clear enough? I’m trying to use MIAB DNS and also Namesilo’s DNS as backup (I’m able to perform the syncing)
  2. Verisign Whois shows these 3 NameServer as configured
  3. However, when querying 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8 and 9.9.9.9 using dig NS my-domain.com @1.1.1.1 +short, I get something different
  4. I get either ns1.dnsowl.com and ns2.dnsowl.com OR ns1.box.my-miab.com and ns2.box.my-miab.com
  5. Point 4 is actually fine, except that, I did not define ns2.box.my-miab.com at namesilo… which probably indicates those big tech DNSes did not accept my latest NameServer updates
  6. So who is manipulating my records here?

Namesilo (Ben) further claims that the registry does not allow this, I asked him which RFC and who is the registry, he could not quote any RFC and said registry = verisign

Check:

  • dnsowl is symcing with ns1.box?
  • the dnsowl nameservers have been entered as the mailinabox secondary nameservers?

I now see that dnsowl is part of namesilo. Did you confirm that namesilo offers secondary dns and that it is setup correctly? The article you quote is using PUCK Free Secondary DNS for this.

  1. The sync is performed manually by a script of mine as Namesilo does not offer secondary DNS
  2. So, no, MIAB does not know about ns1/ns2.dnsowl.com
  3. I assumed that as long as the records are exactly the same on both DNSes, it should work
  4. Do you mean there is something different about secondary DNSes?

Well, in theory this might work. But even in that case you should configure mailinabox external nameservers. Mailinabox will adapt dns records to include the dnsowl nameservers. (check dig miabbox.com NS @ns1.box.miabbox.com)
Just to be sure, I wouldn’t recommend this setup. There are plenty free secondary dns providers to use.
I’m not sure a secondary dns is really different from what you are doing. Only thing I know is that secondary dns has protocols in place to do the sync.

I tried puck back in 2025, but after less than 1 month of using it went offline for over 2-3 weeks.

  1. Where do I configure external nameservers in MIAB?
    2. Able to share which free secondary DNS you are still using?
  2. I remembered asking in Script to copy all DNS records

Check the custom dns page in the admin panel.
