Is the 16GB of RAM not an overkill?
How will you handle the SSD upgrade, if/when you are short of space?
See my post here:
It’s still humming via my VDSL2 80/20 and L2TP tunnel, public IPv4/IPv6 and rDNS set by the L2TP provider and the MIAB is also hosting several domains.
The only problem is, if there is el. power outage or VDSL2 goes down (happend only once) then if other users outside household are using it as well, it become unavailable, but if pushed, an fail-over could be set-up via LTE/NR network (or a neighbors connection)…
[I have the box connected to separate router to allow all sorts of things to be set-up]
[And UPS could also be purchased …]
I definitely recommend setting it up at home.
- You have access to the machine,
- data and
- can increase storage when needed not having to pay “extortionate” amounts when you run out of space and
- can fully utilize the Files in NC
- also recorded 8K/4K family videos can be instantly shared over NC/LTE/NR from anywhere in the world and watched via DLNA or others inside the home network …
- can attach USB external Drive for more storage …etc
- can attached other USB devices … of all sorts
With the emergence of more FTTx providers that offer Symmetrical Up/Down speeds it makes even more sense and I am surprised there is not even more people running it from home
Recent power outage borked the box file system [fixed with]
fsck /dev/sda2
and I had to connect it to TV and get and keyboard to edit the GRUB to:
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="fsck.mode=force quiet splash"
sudo update-grub
and hope it will save me doing it next time [if] there is a power outage …
Older LAPTOP with decent battery (IS) even better option insted of NUC/MicroPC…
- Battery for UPS purpose
- Screen and keyboard
- The size comparing it to NUC/Micro PC is slightly larger, but very portable
- could also run full encryption of internal HDD/SSD/NVMe
- could set up L2TP tunnel on the machine itself and connect on the go
- A laptop with PoE IN would be a dream just one cable
