Forwarding to and responding from Gmail

Hi guys,

I have one alias which is forwarded to Gmail, that’s all and fine. Now the recipient also wants to respond from his Gmail, so I set up a new e-mail account with the same address as the alias, to provide him with SMTP information. But when he tried to send mails, they bounced back with following:

The error that the other server returned was:
553 5.7.1 info@domain.com: Sender address rejected: not owned by user info@domain.com

I solved this by editing the permitted sender list for the alias and set it to info@domain.com. The mails can be sent now. My question is whether this is the only (and preferred) way to achieve such behaviour or if I should’ve done something differently.

Thanks for any replies.

See Sender Address Rejected [Postfix] and https://github.com/mail-in-a-box/mailinabox/issues/511 for related information.

Aaron, thanks for the information.

If I understand the linked issues correctly, the way I achieved this setup is correct, but won’t be supported in the future. Right?
