Before setting up and renting VPS / dedicated server , can i test the server on local ubuntu VM installed on my laptop ?
my purpose is to be able to send and receive emails via rest API

You should be able to run it on a local VM, but depending on your and your ISPs network/firewall situation, not everything might work properly. Usually you can get a feel for the system and there are people who run MiaB from home so it is possible in some situations.
If you are looking at sending and receiving mails through an API you should look at SMTP/IMAP/POP. As far as I know there’s no Rest interface for handling email in MiaB
Yeah looks like mail api is pretty limited but informational: Mail-in-a-Box HTTP API (mailinabox.email)
